Description
There is very little left of the SS Palo Alto aka "cement ship" in Aptos, Ca. The ship was built in 1919 of reinforced concrete in an effort by the Navy to save money while building a ship that would float even if broken in two. This theory did not prove to be true. The ship was purchased by an entertainment company with the intention of creating a hotel, ballroom etc. Additionally, they built a 600' pier as part of the enterprise. A year into the Great Depression, they cut their losses selling everything to the government for 1$. Over the years the ship served many purposes, although never as a hotel, (as far as I can tell), as late as the 1990's it served as a platform for fishermen. Today it is completely unusable, except for use by sealife, crumbling a bit more with every passing storm.
